You Could Fire Up Your Grill With Something Else...Nov 19, 2009 ...but why??? Dump your charcoal (lump charcoal is my favorite!) into the top, the crumple up some newspaper underneath and light the paper. Twenty minutes later, you have enough glowing coals to cook dinner for your family. Here are a few tips:
- Sprinkle a little vegetable oil on the newspaper to keep it burning longer;
- Use lump charcoal - it doesn't have all of the additives of charcoal;
- Do not expect to be able to cook for a large party - you will need a 2nd chimney full of coals.
Works well.Oct 16, 2009 This was larger than I had expected. It can start a large amount of charcoal with just a bit of paper and a match in no time. Also no bad fumes. It is built for many years of use. I'm sure that you wont be disappointed.
Bye bye lighter fluidOct 15, 2009 This past summer I tried a charcoal grill for the first time and as a result my gas grill was never taken out of the garage. It's become an obsession of mine and now I have three different grills, one smoker and a collection of different wood chunks. My newest obsession never would have taken root if there was not an easy, foolproof way of starting the lump or the briquettes. I don't have any other chimney to compare this to but it works perfectly every time. Two sheets of newspaper, dump in your fuel of choice and light it. 10-15 minutes later the coals are ready to go. If you think the newspaper gives too much ash try paper towels sprayed with some cooking oil instead. If you grill on a deck be careful when you light it or where you put it after dumping out the coals as it gets very hot.
Don't use newspaper!Sep 20, 2009 Do yourself a favor and buy a box of "StarterLogg", wood fire starters at Home depot. These are meant to start wood fires in fire places and are made of sawdust and parrafin. Cut off two chunks from the Staterlogg, light them, and place the charcoal chimney with the charcoal inside over the burning chunks. This will get your charcoal started three times faster than with newspaper, and you won't have the burned up newspaper ash blowing around your back yard. I don't know why Weber and Kingsford doesn't team up with the StarterLogg people, and advertise this approach. Hey Weber! I am available to help advertise your product!
Fantastic! Fast! Simple! Not Like Lighter Fluid Days at AllAug 14, 2009 Who knew this could be so much simpler than the old days of using lighter fluid?
Take a single sheet of newspaper, sprinkle it with just a few drops of vegetable oil, wad it up, put it under the chimney, set the chimney on the grate, light it.
It'll smoke for a couple minutes but the flame takes off and really gets the coals going FAST.
Once the coals on top are starting to turn gray just turn it over (you'll want heat resistant mits for this though it can be done without it).
Then spread the coals out flat over the grill surface and start grilling.
Amazing. No more messing with lighter fluid ever again.
And to think I nearly bought a gas barbecue for the convenience -- this makes grilling with charcoal briquets super convenient too.
I can't rate it highly enough. It works that well.
