Description:

favorite "good bug" ladybugs have been popular beneficial insects for the past 20 years. When released at sundown (because they don't fly at night), ladybugs eat aphids, mealy bugs, scale, leaf hoppers, and other destructive pests. And they keep on eating until the bad guys are gone, laying their own eggs in the process. When new pests arrive, fresh ladybugs will be waiting. You will love them because ladybugs really work, plus they will be doing something favorable for the environment. LADYBUGS (Hippodamia convergens) USE: Ladybugs prefer to eat aphids and will devour up to 50 a day, but they will also attack scale, mealy bugs, boil worm, leaf hopper, and corn ear worm. They dine only on insects and do not harm vegetation in any way. RELEASE: Ladybugs should always be released after sundown since they only fly in the daytime. During the night, they will search the area for food and stay as long as there is food for them to eat. The more they eat, the more eggs they lay and the more insect-eating larvae you will have. It is best if the area has been recently watered. Ladybugs tend to crawl up and toward light. So release them in small groups at the base of plants and shrubs that have aphids or other insects, and in the lower parts of trees. RECOMMENDATIONS: Ladybugs may be kept in a refrigerator after they are received (35 to 40 degrees F.) and released as needed. Ladybugs received March through May should not be stored more than 2 or 3 days since their body fat has been depleted. From June on, they may be stored 2 or 3 months. It is normal for there to be several dead Ladybugs in the container, especially those received from March through May. These bugs have reached the end of their life cycle. We have included many extra bugs to compensate for this.

2Okay ladybugs, horrible giftNov 05, 2009
First of all, this is the last time I order off my niece's wishlist without doing a little research. I thought this was some kind of toy.

That initial misunderstanding aside, 1500 live ladybugs might be a pretty decent gift if you actually got 1500 live specimens. Results may vary, but we probably received no more than 1200 live ladybugs and I had to explain to little Henrietta what "internecine cannibalism" means. It was educational for both of us, since I didn't know how vicious these little buggers can get when they don't have a steady supply of aphids. We opened the box and it was like "The Gangs of New York" in there. For real.

Finally, and again this might be partially my own fault, I thought Henrietta wanted these ladybugs for pets or something, and I don't know the first thing about keeping ladybugs. Like where do you order aphids or other ladybug food?

Turns out she just wanted to make a whole bunch of wishes! Took the bag out in the yard and shook it out like she was beating a carpet! There were pieces of ladybug everywhere, bless her heart.

Unfortunately, Hirts brand ladybugs do not have any supernatural powers. It's extremely unlikely that you're going to parlay a bag of ladybugs into a unicorn ride or a diamond princess tiara. Which would be nice to know before clicking Buy It Now.

4probably should have ordered earlier in the yearOct 08, 2009
While I believe Hirt's did a good job of packaging the bugs and giving good instructions on how to release them - I had very limited success with them. I think it may have been too late in the year - suggest ordering in late spring/early summer.

3They all flew awaySep 29, 2009
Maybe I did something wrong, or there wasn't enough to eat, but by morning they were all gone.

Shipment arrived on time and alive! This worked out great for a science fair project:) Would definitely order again.

5Great bugs.. but bewareSep 17, 2009
I opened my ladybugs after following the instructions and they slowly emerged and began to set up what I would call "An adorable Ladybugtopia" on the tomato plants in my back yard. Unfortunately as they were erecting their own version of the Ladybug Lourve, my neighbor's kid..who they claim has ADD, but who I think is just a fricking jerk, came over and yelled, "Lady bug, Lady bug, fly away home. Your house is on fire, your children are gone!" Withing 27 seconds, my Ladybugtopia was abandoned and my tomatoes fell into ruin.
